Portugal Tournament Analysis
Group F has been popularly deemed this tournament’s group of death since they were announced. France, Portugal, and Germany all typically reside within the top ten of the FIFA World Rankings with Germany barely outside in 12th entering EURO 2020. Hungary will be the cellar dwellers of this group as the discrepancy between talent and management between them and the others are far too large to overcome.
Outside of their French groupmates, Portugal may have the most complete squad at EURO 2020. From goalkeeper to attack, you will struggle to find any weaknesses within their starting XI. Manager Fernando Santos will likely set them up in their trusty 4-3-3 formation. An all-around attack led by Cristiano Ronaldo, Bernardo Silva, Diogo Jota, and Bruno Fernandes will induce fear into sides at every stage of the competition and are capable of racking up goals in their opening match against the Hungarians.
The Portuguese defense is often overlooked by the strength of the attack. Long-time goalkeeper Rui Patricio can still produce moments of greatness and offers a sturdy, experienced presence between the goalposts. The same can be said for center-back Pepe, an aging veteran that positions himself well but may struggle a bit to mark some pacier opposition. His partnership, Rúben Dias, was just named FWA Premier League Player of the Year and is one of the most in-form defenders entering the competition. Fullback João Cancelo also brings incredible passing, dribbling, and defensive capability to the squad.
It’s a tough group, but someone has to show up. France is the toughest test of all and Portugal may have to beat them or Germany in order to move on. It’s likely that this trio sees at least three points each after their matches with Hungary and anything after that becomes fair game. It’s the toughest group to predict, but Portugal’s attacking prowess feels undervalued with these team totals.
