Houston Rockets vs. San Antonio Spurs News and Notes

The battle of Texas will take place in San Antonio for the first time without James Harden since June 2012. Of course, Harden was traded to the Brooklyn Nets on Wednesday night in a blockbuster deal involving multiple teams. Victor Oladipo from the Indiana Pacers, guard Dante Exum from the Cleveland Cavaliers, and forward Rodions Kurucs of the Nets are now members of the Rockets. It remains to see who will suit up, but we know for certain Exum will not play as he’s expected to be out another 1-2 months with a calf injury.

With Harden, Houston is coming off back-to-back blowout home losses to the LA Lakers. The Rockets have lost four of their past five games and will court a skeleton lineup on Thursday night against the Spurs. Their other big-name guard, John Wall, will not play against San Antonio as he deals with left knee problems. The only other point guard on the team, Eric Gordon, may also miss this one with left leg tightness. Danuel House will also miss his sixth straight game for Houston out because of health and safety protocols.

New team-leading scorer Christian Wood and his 22.6 points per game will be the only legitimate scoring weapon unless Oladipo ends up suiting up in time for Thursday’s game.

The Spurs come in on their best stretch of the year, winning four of their past five games, which were all played on the road. San Antonio put up wins against top dogs like the Lakers and Clippers during their recent stretch while finishing the road trip with a 10-point win in Oklahoma City.

San Antonio has been without team-leading scorer DeMar DeRozan since January 9th. DeRozan is questionable against the Rockets as he may miss more time due to personal reasons. Lonnie Walker IV has filled in well in his absence. Walker comes in off games of 25 and 24 points while shooting very well from behind the arc.

The Rockets have covered just once in their past five, while San Antonio has covered in three of their past five. Houston has failed to hit the over in their past six, while San Antonio has gone under in three of their past four. The Rockets haven’t covered against the Spurs since December 2018, while the under was the play in four of the last five head-to-head meetings.
