England vs. Croatia News, Analysis, and Picks

England hosts Croatia on Sunday at Wembley Stadium with kick-off scheduled for 9:00 a.m. This is a rematch of the 2018 World Cup semifinal where the Croatians were triumphant in a 2-1 thriller that was solved in extra time. Both sides will be looking to get a crucial three points in what will be the toughest opponent for the two nations during group play.

Croatia has lost some bite in attack with the retirement of Mario Mandžukić, and an aging midfield doesn’t help either. Although likely to see their way out of Group B, they feel a step below England’s quality in midfield.

The Three Lions boast a midfield of world-class ball carriers, playmakers, and disrupters at every turn. The youthful Declan Rice can wreak havoc in the passing lanes as well as aid an iffy backline and fill in the gaps during Croatian attacks. Mason Mount has sprouted recently in club play for Chelsea, looks to be hitting the best form of his young career, and always presents an attacking threat from behind the forwards. Jack Grealish brings ball-carrying, elusiveness, and foul drawing capability makes him a nuisance for any nation’s defense as well as provides the touch of creativity this midfield has lacked in previous years.

Croatia has relied on a world-class midfield throughout its recent rise, and it feels that the drop-off between there and the rest of the squad is too much to overcome. An aging midfield and golden generation will still show at this year’s competition, but it’s hard to see them capable of handling one of England’s best squads in recent years.

Netherlands vs. Ukraine News, Analysis, and Picks

In my previous piece discussing Group C and a potential dark horse in Ukraine, we see them take on the group favorite, the Netherlands, in their backyard at Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam. The Ukrainians will be looking to make noise for the first time at a major competition since a runner-up finish at Euros in 1988. A shocking omission from both EURO 2016 and the 2018 World Cup was a wake-up call for the Netherlands as they will be participating in their first major competition since the 2014 World Cup.

Ukraine is certainly a popular dark horse to make a deep run in this tournament and will compete with Austria for second or potentially first if they can get a positive result against the Netherlands. And most will believe they are capable. Results against France and Portugal on top of an eager and youthful core group can make them a tricky opponent. They often play out of possession against stronger competition and are comfortable doing so by sending fullbacks to join a powerful counterattack.

Due to missing out on previous competitions, Holland’s younger players lack the experience in pressure situations and group stage matches where it can be all or nothing. Frank de Boer has been under recent scrutiny for questionable squad choices and iffy results in qualifying, but he does manage a talented squad. The absence of Virgil Van Dijk is a massive blow and has left a soft spot that hasn’t been filled in their backline.

Andriy Shevchenko’s men are up for the task and face a vulnerable world power. They have proven players and underwent an undefeated campaign during EURO 2020 qualifying. Take Ukraine at draw no bet, and don’t turn a blind eye towards a sprinkle on the juicy three-way money line price if you dare.
