NHL Betting Guide for February 26th

There were some high-scoring affairs from last night’s action in the NHL. Six of the 10 games went over the total, with an average of 7.7 goals in those games. We were so inspired by the offensive output that we keyed in on a couple of totals in today’s betting guide.

New York Rangers vs. Boston Bruins News, Analysis, and Picks

Well, the Boston Bruins left Jaroslav in the trenches taking grenades last night as they refused to relieve him on the first night of a back-to-back. The result was a 7-3 loss (to put it mildly), in which Halak stopped 30 of 37 shots. That means Tuukka Rask gets the nod tonight and will be fresh and ready for action.

The Bruins defensive metrics have deviated substantially from where we expect them to be. Over the last seven games, they allow an average of 11.6 high-danger chances, and opponents have had more than 12 such chances in five of seven contests. In the 10 games prior, opponents were averaging 8.3 chances from high-danger areas, and the Bruins allowed more than 10 chances, just once. The Bruins should progress defensively, which should lead to more low-scoring games.

Scoring goals hasn’t been the New York Rangers forte this season. The club has shot 8.8% or worse in 11 of their 17 games and has the 28th-ranked shooting percentage at 7.9%. Goals could be harder for the Rangers to come by as Artemi Panarin took a leave of absence from the team, as he deals with the fallout of allegations made against him from his time in the KHL. Panarin leads the team in points, assists, powerplay points, and is the minutes-leader among forwards. The Rangers struggling offense may continue to sputter in his absence.

The Rangers have gone over just twice in seven games this month, and the Bs have stayed under in six of 10 road games this season, including three of their last four.

These teams met two weeks ago, and the result was a 1-0 Bruins win. We should expect that low-scoring trend to continue and get on the under 5.5.

Arizona Coyotes vs. Colorado Avalanche Moneyline, Total, and Odds

Moneyline: Coyotes +152, Avs -180

Spread: Coyotes +1.5 (-172), Avs -1.5 (+144)

Total: O5.5 +105

Odds to Win Stanley Cup: Coyotes +5000|Avs +700

Arizona Coyotes vs. Colorado Avalanche News, Analysis, and Picks

After underachieving offensively in six straight, the Colorado Avalanche appear to have turned a corner, at least in terms of production. In the six games from January 30 to February 20, the Avs managed a paltry 7.3 high-danger chances and 25.9 scoring opportunities. Colorado is up to 66 shots, 54 scoring chances, and 21 high-danger chances over their last two games, which indicates that they are starting to hit their stride offensively again.

Worse, the Avs have scored on only 5.0% of their shots over their last five games — which is so bad it doesn’t even need to be elaborated on. Production is creeping up, and output will follow.

A meeting with the Arizona Coyotes might be what’s needed to remedy the Avs’ offensive struggles. The Desert Dogs have given up 63 shots, 62 scoring chances, 26 of which have come from high-danger areas. That follows a leaky defensive trend in which Arizona has given up 30 or more scoring chances in four of eight and double-digit high-danger chances in five of eight.

The Coyotes are also starting to turn the corner offensively, having managed 57 scoring chances and 28 opportunities from high-danger areas over their last two games.

Colorado and Arizona are both trending in the right direction offensively and are due for increased out. With plus-money on a short total, I’m betting tonight is the night things come together. Over 5.5 is the play.
