New York Islanders vs. Pittsburgh Penguins News, Analysis, and Picks

The high-powered Pittsburgh offense takes on the stingy New York defense as the division-winning Penguins meet the Islanders for the ninth time this season.

Pittsburgh, the second-highest scoring team in the league, beat the Islanders six of eight times this season. New York, second-best in goals against, kept things close with five games decided by one goal. They have hit the over four times this year but haven’t met since late March.

That means neither team has played against each other with their trade deadline acquisitions in the lineup. Pittsburgh picked up Jeff Carter from the LA Kings, who has flourished with his new team scoring nine goals in 14 games.

Travis Zajac and Kyle Palmieri were the Islanders’ two significant additions at the deadline from New Jersey, but neither has had the impact Carter has had on the offensive end.

The Penguins finished the regular season strong to clinch a tightly contested East Division. Pittsburgh won three straight and nine of 11 while the Islanders stumbled to the finish line.

New York lost four of five to finish fourth after leading the division much of the season.

The Picks: Islanders moneyline (+118), Total Over 5.5 (+122), Mathew Barzal Over 0.5 Points (-114)

Minnesota Wild vs. Vegas Golden Knights News, Analysis, and Picks

There may be no worst opening-round matchup up for the Vegas Golden Knights than the Minnesota Wild.

Vegas, the second favorite at the FanDuel Sportsbook to win the Stanley Cup at +550, lost five of their past six to Minnesota. During that span, the Knights’ only win came thanks to an Alex Pietrangelo overtime winner on May 5. That was one of six games decided by a goal between these two teams this year.

Three of their past four meetings have gone under between the top-ranked defensive team in Vegas and Minnesota, 16th in the league in goals against.

A big reason for the Knights allowing the fewest goals in the league is their NHL-best penalty kill. It could pose problems for Minnesota’s 23rd ranked power play.

The Knights were also the top-scoring team in the league, while the Wild quietly scored the eighth-most goals in the league.

Vegas’ offense may be hampered as they come in pretty banged up to Game 1. Team leading goal-scorer Max Pacioretty missed the teams’ final six games and is a game-time decision against Minnesota. Alex Tuch’s status is also uncertain. The 18-goal scorer didn’t practice on Friday but is probable for Sunday. Alec Martinez, the teams’ leading goal scorer among defensemen, did not practice Saturday. Martinez has nine goals and nine powerplay points this season.

Tough guy Ryan Reaves hasn’t played in over a month, and although he did practice on Saturday will also be a game-time decision.

The Picks: Wild moneyline (+136), Total Over 5.5 (-118), Kirill Kaprizov Over 0.5 Points (-130)
